Overview
A Web Application Firewall analyzes HTTP/HTTPS traffic to detect and block attacks targeting web applications. While traditional network firewalls look at packet header information, a WAF performs deep inspection of application-layer content. This depth makes it possible to mitigate SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), remote code execution and the other critical vulnerabilities listed in the OWASP Top 10.
Modern WAF solutions incorporate both signature-based and behavioral analysis engines. Known attack patterns are detected instantly through the signature database, while previously unseen attack vectors are caught through anomaly detection and machine learning. Rate limiting and bot management capabilities also bring DDoS attacks and malicious bots within the scope of the WAF.
API security has become an increasingly critical dimension of WAF. Attacks against REST and GraphQL APIs exhibit different patterns from traditional web attacks. Indexline analyzes the API schema (OpenAPI/Swagger) to build a positive security model: only valid API calls are allowed, and requests outside the schema are blocked.
WAF management is an ongoing operational process, not a one-time installation. As the application evolves, WAF rules must be updated and valid traffic patterns for new features must be learned. The WAF-as-a-Service approach takes over this management burden, allowing in-house teams to focus on application development.
How It Works
Application Inventory Analysis: The web applications and APIs to be protected are cataloged. Traffic volume, criticality and security requirements are determined.
Mode Selection and Deployment: Reverse proxy or inline mode is selected. A decision is made between cloud WAF (Cloudflare, AWS WAF, Azure WAF) and an on-premise appliance (F5, Fortinet, Imperva).
Baseline Rule Set Activation: The OWASP Core Rule Set (CRS) or the vendor rule set is loaded. PCI-DSS and ISO 27001 compliance rules are enabled.
Learning Mode: The WAF runs in detection-only mode for a defined period. Legitimate traffic patterns are learned, and rules with false positive potential are identified.
Fine-Tuning: Exception rules are added to reduce false positives. Custom rule sets are written for critical applications.
API Protection Configuration: The OpenAPI schema is loaded. The positive security model is enabled. API rate limiting and bot management are configured.
Continuous Monitoring and Reporting: Attack traffic monitoring, monthly security reports and rule effectiveness analysis are carried out regularly.
Key Features
OWASP Top 10 Protection
A comprehensive rule set actively protects against SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, XXE, SSRF and the other OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities.
API Gateway Security
Schema validation, rate limiting and JWT/OAuth token validation for REST and GraphQL APIs are managed in an integrated way.
Bot Management
Malicious bots are detected through JavaScript challenges and device fingerprinting. Legitimate bots (search engines) are allowlisted.
Layer 7 DDoS Mitigation
HTTP floods, slow POST and application-layer DDoS attacks are prevented with rate limiting and challenge mechanisms.
SSL/TLS Termination
HTTPS traffic is decrypted at the WAF, inspected and re-encrypted before being forwarded to the back end. Modern TLS versions and strong cipher suites are enforced.
Positive Security Model
Only defined, valid request patterns are allowed; everything outside the rules is blocked. This is the most effective approach for API security.
Real-Time Dashboard
The attack map, blocked requests and most frequently targeted URLs are visualized in real time. Instant alert notifications are configured.
Virtual Patching
Known vulnerabilities are temporarily closed with WAF rules without changing application code, buying the development team time to deliver a fix.
Benefits & Advantages
Your web applications are continuously protected against OWASP Top 10 and zero-day attacks.
Discovered vulnerabilities can be closed immediately with virtual patching, without changing application code.
The PCI-DSS Requirement 6.6 mandate is met with a WAF, making compliance evidence easy to provide.
Filtering bot traffic frees infrastructure resources for real users, improving performance.
API attacks and data exfiltration attempts are stopped by detection and blocking mechanisms.
Attack traffic is documented through detailed logging, providing comprehensive evidence for forensic analysis and breach reporting.
Industry Use Cases
E-Commerce
Payment pages were protected with a WAF; SQL injection and carding attacks were blocked, and PCI-DSS compliance was achieved.
Banking
Mobile banking APIs were secured with a WAF; 99% of credential stuffing attacks were blocked.
Healthcare
The patient portal was protected against SQL injection and XSS attacks, eliminating the risk of patient data leakage.
Public Sector Institutions
An e-government portal was rapidly protected with virtual patching; a zero-day vulnerability was closed while source code changes were pending.
Media & Publishing
A high-traffic news site handled election night traffic without interruption thanks to Layer 7 DDoS protection.
Insurance
The agency portal was protected with virtual patching and bot management; form-filling bots and data scraping attempts were stopped.
The Indexline Approach
A WAF deployment is not a one-off project but a living security layer that requires continuous maintenance. Every time the application evolves, new endpoints, parameters and APIs are added, and the WAF must be kept in sync with these changes. Indexline establishes an operating model that integrates WAF updates with the application change management process.
A high false positive rate drives the security team into alert fatigue and paves the way for the WAF to be bypassed. That is why the fine-tuning process is at least as critical as the deployment. Regularly analyzing production traffic and optimizing the rule set preserves WAF effectiveness over the long term.
A WAF is one part of a comprehensive application security strategy; it is not sufficient on its own. Application security reaches the desired level of maturity when secure coding practices, SAST/DAST testing, penetration testing and the WAF are considered together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Cloud WAF or on-premise WAF?
Cloud WAF (Cloudflare, AWS WAF) offers rapid deployment, global PoPs and scalability, and DDoS protection is usually included. On-premise WAF provides data sovereignty and deep customization. A hybrid model is also possible. The choice depends on your infrastructure strategy, compliance requirements and operational capacity.
What happens if the WAF produces a false positive?
A false positive means a legitimate user request is blocked. To minimize this risk, we start in detection-only mode, learn the traffic profile and then move safely to blocking mode. Exception rules are added for specific IP or URL patterns.
Does a WAF fully cover API security?
A WAF provides significant protection against API attacks, but comprehensive API security also requires an API Gateway, OAuth/OIDC management and API rate limiting. Indexline designs a holistic API security architecture together with the WAF.
Is a WAF sufficient for PCI-DSS?
PCI-DSS Requirement 6.6 mandates web application protection, which can be achieved through a WAF or a secure code review. A WAF meets this requirement, but PCI-DSS compliance requires a holistic program.
How long can a virtual patch be used safely?
Virtual patching is a temporary measure. It closes the vulnerability until the application code is permanently fixed. A bridge period of 2-4 weeks is typically planned; however, longer-term virtual patching can also be considered for critical resources.
How are WAF logs integrated with a SIEM?
WAF logs are forwarded to the SIEM platform via syslog, API or log streaming. Log format (CEF, LEEF, JSON) compatibility is ensured. Correlation rules link WAF events with other security events.
How does a WAF protect against zero-day attacks?
In addition to signature updates, a WAF protects against unknown threats through anomaly detection and behavioral analysis. Virtual patches are applied as soon as a zero-day is discovered. Threat intelligence feed integration further strengthens this defense.
Can a WAF be used together with a CDN?
Yes, cloud WAFs usually work integrated with a CDN (Cloudflare, AWS CloudFront + AWS WAF). This combined architecture provides both performance and security benefits. For an on-premise WAF, a CDN origin shield configuration enables traffic routing without bypassing the WAF.
