Hybrid Data Security

We protect all your digital assets, both on-premises and in the cloud, by monitoring them from a single centralized security platform. Consistent encryption, access control and policy management deliver end-to-end data security across your hybrid environment.

Overview

Most organizations no longer run entirely on-premises or entirely in the cloud; they operate hybrid infrastructures that combine both. This hybrid reality makes data security management significantly more complex. A split infrastructure managed with different security tools, different policy engines and different visibility capabilities paves the way for inconsistent policy enforcement and visibility gaps.

Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) is a next-generation security discipline that continuously monitors where data resides in hybrid environments, how it is classified, who accesses it and what its security status is. Data flow mapping, sensitive data location discovery and access anomaly detection are the core functions of DSPM. Indexline places the DSPM approach at the center of its hybrid data security projects.

Encryption is the cornerstone of data security in a hybrid environment. Keeping data encrypted regardless of whether it is on-premises, in the cloud or in transit guarantees that it remains unusable even if it falls into an attacker's hands. Key management (BYOK - Bring Your Own Key, HYOK - Hold Your Own Key) is a critical dimension of a cloud data sovereignty strategy. Indexline designs encryption architectures that let organizations retain key control independently of their cloud provider.

Identity-centric security is the key to consistent access control in a hybrid environment. "Network location" is no longer a trust criterion; identity, device compliance and access context have taken precedence. Centralized IAM, MFA and Privileged Access Management solutions apply a consistent access policy to both on-premises and cloud resources. This unified identity approach resolves the access management complexity of the hybrid environment.

How It Works

1

Data Mapping: All data stores across on-premises and cloud environments are cataloged. The location, volume and flow paths of sensitive data are identified.

2

Classification: Automated classification is configured by data category (PII, confidential, trade secret).

3

Encryption Architecture: At-rest and in-transit encryption standards are defined. A BYOK/HYOK key management model is selected.

4

Access Policy Alignment: Policy consistency is established between on-premises IAM and cloud IAM. Privileged access is brought under centralized control with PAM.

5

DSPM Activation: Sensitive data movement, access anomalies and security posture changes are continuously monitored.

6

DLP Policy Synchronization: On-premises and cloud DLP policies are aligned. Data egress channels on both sides are controlled.

7

Centralized Visibility: A unified security dashboard and compliance reporting are configured for all environments.

Key Features

Unified Data Discovery

On-premises databases, file servers and cloud storage are scanned to automatically identify every sensitive data location.

DSPM (Data Security Posture Management)

Data risk is assessed continuously. Overshared, misplaced or unprotected sensitive data automatically triggers alerts.

BYOK / HYOK Encryption

Encryption key control independent of the cloud provider, safeguarding data sovereignty.

Unified Access Policy

Identity-centric access policies are applied consistently to both on-premises and cloud resources.

Cross-Environment Compliance

Compliance with KVKK (Turkish Personal Data Protection Law), GDPR, ISO 27001 and PCI-DSS requirements is reported across the entire hybrid environment.

Access Behavior Analytics

Access patterns to sensitive data are monitored; anomalous access (after hours, high volume, new geography) automatically triggers alerts.

Data Lifecycle Management

Data that has exceeded its retention period and is no longer needed is retired through secure deletion procedures.

Shadow Data Detection

Data copies, test databases and unauthorized cloud storage created without IT's knowledge are detected automatically.

Benefits & Advantages

All data in the hybrid environment becomes visible from a single platform, eliminating security blind spots.

A consistent encryption policy ensures critical data remains unusable to attackers even in a data breach scenario.

Overshared sensitive data exposed to unauthorized access is proactively identified by DSPM.

Unified compliance reporting simplifies KVKK, GDPR, PCI-DSS and ISO 27001 audits through a single platform.

Access anomaly detection catches insider data theft attempts at an early stage.

Data lifecycle management optimizes storage costs while reducing the legal risk of unnecessary data accumulation.

Industry Use Cases

Finance

Customer data in on-premises core banking and a cloud analytics platform was managed with a single policy engine; compliance reporting was automated.

Healthcare

Patient data now flows over an encrypted channel between local servers and a cloud PACS; data sovereignty was preserved with BYOK.

Insurance

Policy data scattered across the hybrid environment was mapped with DSPM; shadow data and oversharing were detected.

Retail

The customer data flow between on-premises POS and a cloud CRM was secured with an encrypted channel and DLP policy.

Manufacturing

Engineering files constituting intellectual property were encrypted end to end across the hybrid environment; unauthorized egress was blocked automatically.

Public Sector

Ministry data was kept on-premises while analytics workloads moved to the cloud; data sovereignty was aligned with legal requirements through BYOK.

The Indexline Approach

The "weakest link" principle applies to hybrid data security. Even the strongest on-premises security control cannot compensate for a weak configuration in the cloud. That is why we start with a holistic security assessment covering both environments.

Data discovery and classification are a prerequisite for directing security investments correctly. Protection policies cannot be designed without knowing what data resides where. Automated data discovery tools lay this foundation; risk-based protection measures are then implemented with the right prioritization.

DSPM technology is quite new and constantly evolving. Indexline evaluates the latest DSPM platforms (Cyera, Varonis, Dig Security) and provides independent advisory throughout the process of selecting the solution best suited to the organization's infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between DSPM and DLP?

DLP controls data movement (channel security), while DSPM monitors where data resides and its security status. The two are complementary: DSPM detects data that is misplaced or unprotected, and DLP prevents that data from leaving the organization.

Does BYOK really improve security?

BYOK makes encryption keys independent of the cloud provider's access. Key access cannot be obtained from within the cloud provider or through a legal request. It is critical for data sovereignty and regulatory compliance; however, the key management infrastructure itself must also be managed securely.

What is shadow data and why is it dangerous?

Shadow data consists of data copies created and managed outside IT security policy. Production data copied into test databases, files uploaded to personal cloud accounts or data shared by unaware employees are examples of shadow data. This data falls outside the scope of security policies and carries leakage risk.

Should all data be encrypted?

With a risk-based approach, sensitive and critical data should be encrypted first. Encrypting all data carries performance and management costs. Mandatory, recommended and optional encryption categories are defined according to the data classification matrix.

If the cloud provider's data security is sufficient, why is an additional solution needed?

Cloud providers secure the infrastructure; data security (access, classification, policy) belongs to the customer. Under the shared responsibility model, additional layers are required to protect customer data. In addition, a vendor-neutral solution is needed for consistent policy management in multi-cloud environments.

How is data lifecycle management implemented?

The retention policy is determined by data class and legal obligations. Automated data archiving and secure deletion procedures are configured. Crypto-shredding (destruction of the encryption key) is an effective method for secure deletion on magnetic media.

How are on-premises and cloud access policies aligned?

Cloud IAM solutions such as Azure AD or Okta federate with on-premises Active Directory to create a single identity source. Policy decisions are made centrally and enforced consistently in both environments. PAM solutions audit privileged access to the same standard in both environments.

Where should we start a hybrid data security project?

The most effective starting point is data discovery and classification. Prioritization is impossible without knowing where sensitive data resides and how much of it there is. Next, encryption and access controls for the most critical data stores are strengthened. Continuous monitoring infrastructure with DSPM is built in parallel.
